Betfair celebrates its fourth birthday today

It was on Oaks Day at Epsom four years ago that Betfair.com was originally launched and since then Betfair has gone on to become the biggest and most successful on-line bookmaker in the world.

The rise of betting exchanges, which provide punters with greater value, choice and control, have changed the way many people bet today. Whilst dozens of me-too exchanges have been set up in the wake of Betfair's success, Betfair still retains an estimated 85% share of the betting exchange market.

The site's 200,000 registered users (including active accounts from over 85 countries) are testimony to the popularity and success of the company. The technology is able to cope with 1,000,000 transactions a day and at peak time matches up to 12,000 bets a minute. Betfair has also recently launched its own poker site.

Director of Public Affairs, Andrew Silverman, commented:"Betfair has delivered unparalleled choice and value to punters since its inception in 2000 and injected real competition into the UK sports betting market. The company has revolutionised betting in the UK and boosted the integrity of sport through the conclusion of industry leading agreements with major sporting regulatory bodies.

"Betfair is also ideally placed to work in partnership with the new Gambling Commission and looks forward to the introduction of the Gambling Bill that will pave the way for its creation."

The immensely popular "Newmarket Nights" season, sponsored for the first time this year by the East of England's only regional radio station, Vibe FM, start in just over a week on Friday 18th June when Britain's top girl band, the Sugababes, will play after evening racing on the July Course. A week later on 25th June, America's greatest ever pop band, Blondie, will take to the stage. Tickets are still currently available for all seven nights but it is advisable to book in advance to be sure of a ticket.

"Last year four of the six Nights sold out and, although we were unable to announce this year's full line-up of bands until much later than usual, we expect something similar for the seven Nights this summer," said Newmarket's Managing Director, Lisa Hancock.

"The Vibe FM Newmarket Nights are by far our most popular meetings of the year, offering fantastic entertainment and a very special atmosphere. Tickets are currently still available for all seven Nights, but they are selling very quickly and we cannot guarantee availability on the night, though we will make it clear through the media the day before each event exactly what the ticket situation is.

"I accept that the Nights are not universally popular with some of our regular racegoers who might only decide to go racing when they see the declarations, only then to find that it is a sell-out. Our message is that booking in advance is strongly advised and there are good savings to be had on purchases made on-line at www.newmarketracecourses.co.uk. I would also stress that without the success of these Nights, putting on the high prize money, top class cards at the July Meeting and on the Rowley Mile would simply not be possible."

Members' Enclosure admission is £27 for adults while the Grandstand & Paddock is £18 and the Family Enclosure £8. Tickets for children under 16 cost £9 in Members, £6 in Grandstand & Paddock and £3 in the Family Enclosure. A 10% discount is offered on all adult tickets booked on-line up to two days prior to the event and for bookings made via our booking hotline 08707 200 201 28 days or more in advance (15% for groups of 20 people or more).
