A £10,000,000 NATIONAL GAMBLE?

William Hill are bracing themselves for the one of the biggest payouts in the history of the Martell Grand National . Papillon was backed from 33-1 in the morning to 10-1 by race time on Saturday afternoon and punters will be needing wheelbarrows to take their cash away.

"It was an exceptional gamble," said Hill's spokesman David Hood. "Papillon was well tipped up in the morning and the telephone lines were already ringing off the hook when we opened at 8am. What has made the plunge so huge is the 'snowball' effect of casual, once a year, punters backing him blindly in such sheer numbers. Even by mid-day when the price had been trimmed to 14-1 punters were still snapping it up and they will be celebrating for weeks. I would reckon the returns will be well over £10 million pound from the race.

"The early indication are that overall turnover levels for National Day will exceed those of recent years. Business was very brisk and with good levels of turnover through our two Internet sites and a substantial number of callers using our low-deduction operation through Athlone, Ireland. I would estimate industry turnover for the day will be pushing between £90 & £100 million pounds."
