CECIL'S PREDICTION PROVED RIGHT

Before the flat season even began, Newmarket-based trainer, Henry Cecil, was predicting that Shibboleth would be one of his most exciting three-year-old colts, and yesterday he was proved correct.

The Danzig colt easily won the Alex Scott Maiden Stakes at Newmarket by five lengths from the Willie Muir-trained Material Witness, and in doing so earned himself a top-priced 12/1 quote from Victor Chandler and Stanley for the Sagitta 2,000 Guineas at the same track on May 6.

Cecil commented: "Shibboleth is a bit of a baby who is just coming to himself. He is beginning to settle and, whatever he did today, he could only improve on. I'll talk to Prince Khalid Abdullah [Shibboleth's owner] and see how he comes out of the race. But I'm not going to push him."

CELTIC NATIVE MAY STAY HURDLING

Celtic Native, trained by Philip Hobbs, might be campaigned over hurdles next season with the Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle as her major target, after she gained her eighth win of the season in the Cheltenham Mares' Only Handicap Hurdle yesterday.

Cheltenham racegoers gave Celtic Native a fantastic reception as she gained her second win at the Gloucestershire course in two days. Less than 24 hours earlier she had won the betinternet.com ‘National Hunt' Auction Novices' Hurdle by eight lengths from the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained Hannigan's Lodger.

Hobbs commented: "That will most likely be it for the season, even though there is an £8,000 mares only novices' hurdle in which she gets only a 10lb penalty at Perth next week.

"We had intended going novice chasing with her next season, but we might possibly consider going for the Stayers' Hurdle. We'll see, but you wouldn't know how good she is when conditions are right. The one thing we learnt at the Festival was that even though she's a very sound mare she won't go on going any faster than good to soft."
