The Barry Hills-trained promising Distant Music was beaten today in the re-scheduled Lane's End Greenham Stakes at Newmarket.
After winning his three races easily as a two year old, the race today looked a formality and he went off the 13-8 on favourite in the Guineas trial. The horse, who was held up by jockey Michael Hills, looked to be travelling well in the seven furlong event. But about a furlong from home the signs were not looking good. A few were involved at the business end of things including Scarteen Fox (fourth) and Winning Venture (third), the latter seemed to be given not to harsh a ride by Walter Swinburn and may be one to keep an eye on.

But the winner of this well contested race came to take this from last to first. In a great ride by Philip Robinson, Barathea Guest conquered the favourite by a head but in doing so unfortunately gained a suspension for his jockey for excessive use of the whip which did seem a bit of a hard decision, as the horse responded to the persuader.

Once the 9-4 favourite for the 2000 Guineas, Distant Music is now on offer at 5-1 for the Classic back at headquarters in two week's time.

In the Shadwell Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes, the Guineas trial for the fillies, Petruska stamped her authority over a field of 13 when flying home by four lengths to her nearest rival, the Mick Channon-trained Seazun. She left the field for dead in what was a very impressive Guineas trial.

Trainer Sir Michael Stoute teamed up with his new retained jockey Kieran Fallon said of his charge: "She did it very well and what pleased me most was the way she wrapped the race up so quickly."

Fallon was equally impressed saying: "You couldnt fault her today, she showed that last week in her work and I just hoped she would be able to do it on the track too."

Bookmakers reacted by installing Petruska as their new 2-1 favourite.
