GREAT ENTRY OF 108 FOR THE SAGITTA 2000 GUINEAS

A sharply-increased entry of 108 has been received for the Sagitta 2000 Guineas, the first British Classic of the year which is held at Newmarket on Saturday, May 3, 2003.

This number is an increase of 15 on last season's 93 entries, while 86 entries were made in 2001. Prize money stands at a new record level of £320,000.

Ireland's champion trainer Aidan O'Brien has won the Sagitta 2000 Guineas twice, with King Of Kings in 1998 and Rock Of Gibraltar last year. The latter, owned by Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson in partnership with Sue Magnier, was gaining his third Group One success and he went on to win four more top-class races, toppling the great Mill Reef's record of six Group One victories in succession.

This year the master of Ballydoyle has 25 representatives, who are headed by current ante-post favourite Hold That Tiger, winner of three races last year including the Group One Grand Criterium at Longchamp, France in October, when proving half-a-length too strong for Le Vie Dei Colori. The Storm Cat colt then put in a good effort on his first start on dirt later that month when the five-length third to Vindication in the Grade One Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Arlington Park, USA.

Other significant O'Brien entries include Tomahawk, eighth in that same American contest, having earlier finished runner-up in two Group One juvenile contests at Newmarket, the Shadwell Park Middle Park Stakes on October 3, and the Darley Dewhurst Stakes 16 days later, Statue Of Liberty, unbeaten on two starts in 2002 including the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, and Van Nistelrooy, the most expensive yearling in the world in 2001 at $6.4 million, who was successful in three races as a two-year-old including the Group Two Galileo E.B.F. Futurity Stakes at the Curragh in August.

The other powerhouse of international Flat racing, Godolphin, has the pick of 18 entries. The best of these could be Lateen Sails, who was extremely impressive when winning his only start in a Newmarket maiden in October, getting the better of Powerscourt by a length and a quarter, for former trainer Henry Cecil.

Godolphin's runners in the UAE 2,000 Guineas at Nad Al Sheba on February 13 could also play a hand here. Western Diplomat finished the half-length runner-up to Victory Moon with Bourbonnais (3rd), Dublin (7th) and Dubai Lightning (9th).

Further international interest is added by entries from France, Germany and Italy. The Gallic entry is the Criquette Head-Maarek-trained Snipewalk, who was the close fourth to Italian representative Le Vie Dei Colori, trained by Roberto Brogi, in a Group Three contest at Longchamp in September. German hopes rest with Ransom O'War - the Erica Mader-trained Red Ransom colt won a novice stakes at Southwell in November by five lengths for former handler Mark Johnston.

Other notable entries include the Dermot Weld-trained unbeaten colt Refuse To Bend, the John Gosden-trained Oasis Dream, who won last year's Shadwell Park Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket, Tout Seul, trained by Fulke Johnson Houghton to be the one and a quarter length hero of Newmarket's Darley Dewhurst Stakes, and the Roger Charlton-trained Trade Fair, sent off favourite for the latter event and running creditably to finish third.

80 FOR SAGITTA 1000 GUINEAS

Eighty entries have been received for the first fillies Classic of the season - the Sagitta 1000 Guineas, with record prize money of £320,000, which is run on Newmarket's famous Rowley Mile on Sunday, May 4, 2003.

Among them are 10 representing Godolphin, successful with Kazzia 12 months ago and Cape Verdi in 1998, including Echoes In Eternity, purchased by the Maktoum family's operation from Robert Sangster after an impressive win on her only start in a Newmarket maiden last September. The UAE 1000 Guineas was held at Nad Al Sheba on March 13 and fell to Godolphin's Mezzo Soprano, who defeated stable companion Gonfilia by three lengths in good style. Other interesting Godolphin entries include Hi Dubai, a full-sister to Fantastic Light who finished second on her only start in a Newmarket maiden last season.

Newmarket-based Sir Michael Stoute is also well represented with nine entries. The most prominent among these is Russian Rhythm, the 2002 Lowther Stakes winner who only found Airwave too good in the Group One Betfair Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket on October 4. The Freemason Lodge handler also has the likes of Crystal Star, undefeated in two starts last year, and Spanish Sun, triumphant on her only start at Kempton Park in impressive fashion last season.

The current ante-post favourite for the Sagitta 1000 Guineas is Soviet Song. The James Fanshawe-trained filly was undefeated in three starts last season, taking in a Kempton maiden (defeating Airwave), the Listed Milcars Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket and rounding off her campaign with victory in the Group One Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile at Ascot.

All-conquering Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien has yet to add the Sagitta 1000 Guineas to his illustrious CV and has entered eight fillies for the 2003 renewal. The best of his entries at this stage would seem to be Yesterday, a full-sister to Quarter Moon, who won a Listed race at Leopardstown on her final start of 2003.

There are six French-trained entries, with the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Six Perfections looking to be the most significant. Criquette Head-Maarek, who has trained three winners of the Classic in the last 20 years, has entered Etoile Montante, two lengths runner-up to Six Perfections in the Prix Marcel Boussac, while Andre Fabre could rely on the Group Two winner Zinziberine.

There could be a runner from "across the pond" in the 2003 Sagitta 1000 Guineas in the shape of Luvah Girl. Formerly trained in England by Roger Charlton, for whom she won the Group Two Owen Brown Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket last October, Luvah Girl is now under the care of Jenine Sahadi in the USA and landed the La Habra Stakes at Santa Anita on February 28.

Michael Prosser, Newmarket's Clerk of the Course, commented today: "We are delighted to have received such a strong entry for the Sagitta 1000 Guineas.

"Newmarket-trained horses are well represented with Soviet Song and Russian Rhythm leading the way while it is encouraging to see such a good entry from overseas."

NEWMARKET TWINS WITH THE CURRAGH

Newmarket Racecourse today announced that it has twinned with the Curragh Racecourse in Ireland. It is believed to be the first such twinning arrangement between British and Irish racecourses.

The main aim is to encourage Newmarket racegoers to visit the Curragh and vice-versa. Local trainers are also being encouraged to send more runners across the Irish Sea to compete at the other racecourse's meetings. In addition, each course will have a reciprocal sponsorship on each other's 1000 Guineas Day.

"We are delighted to have forged this exciting link with the Curragh who approached us with the idea last year," commented Newmarket's Managing Director, Lisa Hancock.

"There is such a great symmetry between the two courses, each being surrounded by training stables and each uniquely located at the heart of their country's flat racing industry.

"This year we will be running a trip for our racegoers to Irish St Leger Day, while the Curragh will be bringing their racegoers over here for our July Cup. Both of us are looking to build on the twinning arrangement in the future with further joint initiatives."

ROOSTER BOOSTER TO BE HONOURED AT WINCANTON

Smurfit Champion Hurdle winner Rooster Booster is to be presented with the John G Charlton Award tomorrow (Thursday) at Wincanton.

The award, which celebrates all British-bred Grade One winners, is presented by Mrs Evelyn Charlton in memory of her son John.

Former trainer David Nicholson is arranging the presentation on behalf of the British Horseracing Board.

Rooster Booster will parade in the parade ring after the opening contest at the Somerset course and the nine-year-old will be accompanied by his breeders, Richard and Elsie Mitchell, owner Terry Warner and trainer Philip Hobbs.

The Riverwise gelding produced a brilliant performance to gain his fifth successive victory of the season in hurdling's blue riband event at Cheltenham last week, proving 11 lengths too strong for nearest rival Westender.

The last winner of the John G Charlton Award was Tiutchev, who won the Grade One Ritz Club Ascot Chase at Ascot on February 15.

JAMES EUSTACE LAUNCHES WEBSITE

Newmarket racehorse trainer James Eustace is pleased to announce the launch of his website www.JamesEustace.com.

The easy-to-navigate site has been designed with both racing enthusiasts and the horseracing industry in mind.

www.JamesEustace.com aims to provide details of all news stories breaking at Park Lodge as well as information on the racing partnerships that James runs.

Eustace said: "Firstly, we hope www.JamesEustace.com will be an interesting port of call for anyone who shares our love of racing. Also, websites are a worthwhile asset in any business and we look forward to ours being successful. It will be updated on a weekly basis, which I hope will mean that people take the time to return to it on a regular basis."

Nick Gomersall of Racing Webs has designed the site. In recent years he has been behind the construction of Martin Pipe's Henry Cecil's and Nigel Twiston Davies' sites.

Tony Rushmer will co-ordinate all editorial for the site. He is an experienced journalist who covers sport for national newspapers and magazines.
