THE VALUE BETTING COLUMN EVERY SATURDAY

SATURDAY, MARCH 15, 2003

LINGFIELD PARK, Flat all-weather racing on Polytrack

Going - Standard
BP= best price offered by Ladbrokes, Coral, William Hill & Tote.

4.10pm - Betdirect.co.uk Handicap (ClassB) 3yo plus, ££12,209 7f

1 (9) 433002- Wannabe Around(166) P D Savill 5 10-00 D Nicholls K Fallon
BP=16/1 Coral & Tote
Last raced on September 30 and has only raced once on this surface when finding 10 furlongs too far. Has plenty to do

2 (12) 43306-3 Granny's Pet(7) M Arbib 9 9-10 P Cole J Fortune
BP=14/1 Coral & Ladbrokes
Grannyís Pet, despite being nine, only made his all-weather debut last time out at Wolverhampton on the Fibresand. Untried on this surface and therefore has questions to answer,

3(2) 05000-1 Rafferty(7) Sheikh Marwan Al Maktoum 4-9-3 C Brittain L Dettori
BP=9/1 Tote
Won on his all-weather debut at Wolverhampton with Grannyís Pet a length back in third of six runners. Has more to do here.

4(10) 210041- Tom Tun(126) Mrs O Tunstall 8 9-3 J Given M Fenton
BP=20/1 Ladbrokes
Sprinter who has won at Wolverhampton and Southwell, two other all-weather tacks with different surfaces, but at six furlongs. Last raced in November.

5(7) 632163 Sundried Tomato(7) Jeremy Arnold 4 9-3 P Hiatt L Fletcher(5)
BP=14/1 Tote & William Hill
Consistent performer at Wolverhampton and Southwell over usually shorter distances but did win a seven-furlong event in February.

.

6(5) 200140- Lunar Leo (161) Bruce W Wyatt 5 9-3 S Williams Martin Dwyer
BP=5/1 Coral
Interesting contender who last raced at Belmont Park in October. Good second here in a similar race at the end of 2001 on only other run on an all-weather surface. Worth keeping an eye on and runs well fresh. However, he is no value.

7(15) 00164-2 Marshman(42) J H Ellis 4 8-13 M Tompkins A McCarthy(3)
BP=9/1 Tote & William Hill
Consistent sort who has run well in similar races. Had a break since early February and will need to be his sharpest as he is racing off his highest mark.

8(3) 415144 Lygeton Lad(7)J McGonagle & Mr B J McGonagle 5 8-12 S Gay Kelleway Drowne
BP=5/1 generally except Tote
Consistent sort who is closely handicapped with Marshman, just getting the worts of it at the weights.

9(11) 122413-Eyecatcher(77)Dr Catherine Wills 6 8-12 J Fanshawe O Urbina
BP=5/1 except Ladbrokes
Another interesting runner - ideally needs seven and a half furlongs as he comes late over this distance. More lightly raced than some and has cope for improvement. Last raced on December 28 and it is a question whether he is fit. The likely strong pace will suit him.

10 (4) 403252 Middleton Grey(7) Derrick C Broomfield 5 8-11 v D Arbuthnot S Whitworth
BP=12/1 generally
His form is at Wolverhampton and Southwell and has more to do here.

11 (16) 34314-6 Lakota Brave(7) J L Guillambert 9 8-10 N Littmoden J-P Guillambert(5)
BP=9/1 Coral
Old warrior who often runs well here at Lingfield. But there are others with more scope.

12 (13) 000-300 Compton Banker(35) Erik Penser 6 8-7 G Butler E Ahern
BP=16/1 Ladbrokes
Has shown promise here but has yet to fulfil it.

13 Non-runner

14 Non-runner

15 (14) 305305 Zarzu(7)Nigel Shields 4 8-5 K Burke D Fox(7)
BP=
Five and six furlong horse who has more to do.

16 (6) 1-10322 Golden Brief(1) John Kelsey-Fry 5 8-5 v K Burke D Sweeney
BP=14/1 Tote
Has been running very well and was perhaps unlucky last time against Miss George. Looks like he is still on the upgrade. Fit and well. Great value.

SUMMARY
This is a competitive affair. The two most interesting candidates - Lunar Leo and Eyecatcher - are tempting but have questions mark against them and they represent little value. On the other hand GOLDEN BRIEF has been running very well and is great value at 14/1 each way.
