SLIMMED-DOWN LAMBOURN OPEN DAY
The 2001 Lambourn Trainers' Open Day is due to take place on its usual day, Good Friday, which this year is on April 13, in Lambourn Valley, the Valley of the Racehorse.
However, because of the foot and mouth outbreak in Britain, the situation will be reviewed at the end of March. If it does take place, the day will be limited to its key part, the visits to the many trainers' yards in the area, which will be open between 8.30am and 1pm.
The planned afternoon events have been cancelled and the usual trade stands will be absent. Insurance does not cover cancellation from foot and mouth disease and the risk of losing deposit money on various pre-booked activities is too great.
The decision to slim down the day, whose proceeds go to the Lambourn Valley Housing Trust and other local charities, was taken by the organising committee.
Mark Smyly, the Lambourn Trainers' Open Day Co-ordinator, explained: "We discussed all the issues most carefully before coming to this decision to go ahead on a limited scale.
"We will continue to review all factors and if, at the end of March, it does not seem appropriate to hold the Lambourn Open Day then the event will be called off.
"We are obviously keen to go ahead with what has become an established and much-enjoyed event over the years, but we are responsible people and will only proceed if it is wise to do so."
Full details of the yards that will be open and their opening times, plus all the other details, will be publicised at the beginning of April.
SANDOWN ABANDONED ON FRIDAY, MARCH 9, 2001, AND INSPECTION SET FOR 7.00AM ON SATURDAY, MARCH 10, 2001, TO SEE IF SATURDAY'S MEETING CAN GO AHEAD
Unfortunately Sandown's meeting on Friday, March 9, 2001, has had to be abandoned due to waterlogging.
Deputy Course Clerk Brian Clifford said: "It was a relatively dry night but we had an unprecedented amount of rain on Thursday and it is not safe.
"We will inspect the course at 7am on Saturday to assess the prospects for the second day of our meeting. At present Saturday's card will be as scheduled but we will certainly look at switching the Grand Military Gold Cup from Friday's fixture."
Sandown has announced that badges and tickets for Friday, March 9, 2001 will be valid on Saturday, March 10, 2001 if racing does go ahead.
