THE VALUE BETTING COLUMN EVERY SATURDAY

ASCOT, SATURDAY, MARCH 31, 2001,
2.50PM - THE WEATHERBYS HURDLE (GRADE TWO), 3M

BP=best price offered by Coral, Ladborkes, Tote or William Hill.

GOING: Heavy, soft in places

1) 11/313-3 Anzum Richard Philips 10-11-11 Richard Johnson
Grand old campaigner who came with an amazing run to land the 1999 Bonusprint Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Made a most encouraging seasonal reappearance at Cheltenham in January, finishing strongly over an inadequate 2m 5f in the Byrne Bros Cleeve Hurdle. Three miles round Ascot plenty of give underfoot will suit him much better (won 1999 Long Walk Hurdle) as he is an out and out stayer. He should be thereabouts but may still just need this run (reportedly a very lazy worker at home). Has been lightly raced over the last two years.

BP= 9/4 William Hill

2) 11-P412 Teaatral Charles Egerton 7-11-11 Norman Williamson
Likes give underfoot and successful in this race 12 months ago. Came to hand this season when successful in the Agfa Hurdle over 2m at Sandown on heavy ground in February. Surprisingly defeated at Kempton later in the month when trying to concede 8lb to Merry Masquerade in the 3m Rendlesham Hurdle (caught close home after looking the likely winner). Must be respected but others with similar claims look to offer better value over this stamina-testing trip and surface.

BP=11/4 Ladbrokes & Tote

3) 212-001 Merry Masquerade Mary Reveley 10-11-07 Andrew Thornton
Very useful performer last season when victorious in handicap hurdles under big weights. Put a couple of disappointing efforts behind him when reversing 2000 form with Teaatral in the Rendlesham Hurdle at Kempton last month (4lb worse off today for 2 lengths). Relishes heavy ground and will go very close.
BP=4 Tote

4) 32/PF53 City Hall Val Ward 7-11-03 JP McNamara
Once a very decent performer (eighth in 1999 Smurfit Champion Hurdle) but has shown moderate form on his return from injury this season. Reverting to hurdling here after three indifferent performances in novice chases. Cannot be totally dismissed.

BP=50 Ladbrokes

5) P04114 Frosty Canyon Paul Webber 8-11-03 Jimmy McCarthy
Twice successful this season under big weights in competitive handicaps at Kempton and Warwick. Seemingly found out when tried out in better company at Cheltenham in November, and was fourth again under a big weight at Sandown last month. Trip and ground no problem but looks simply not good enough to win this.

BP=4 Ladbrokes

6) 24153P Maidstone Monument John Best 6-11-03 Rodi Greene
Pulled up in 0-95 handicap under 10st 3lb last time out and has absolutely no chance whatsoever here.
BP=300 Ladbrokes

7) 011-216 Maid Equal Martin Pipe 10-10-12 Mr Tom Scudamore
Game and consistent mare in her own class who stays this trip well and does not mind this ground. Successful in valuable Tote Bookmakers Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham in November and a credible effort again at Prestbury Park when sixth behind Go Ballistic in December. Stays very well but has plenty to find at the weights here.

BP=14 William Hill

8) 1/112- Monica’s Story Charlie Mann 7-10-12 Noel Fehily
Looked to be an exciting prospect last season following a victory in a bumper and two novice hurdles. Asking a lot of her to win here after being off the track since January 2000.

BP=16 Ladbrokes, Tote & William Hill

CONCLUSION
A fascinating contest where MERRY MASQUERADE is the value bet each-way.

GOOD LUCK
