Outstanding filly Petrushka was yesterday withdrawn from the US$6million Group I Dubai World Cup.

Following veterinary advice, trainer Sir Michael Stoute notified Les Benton, Chairman of the Dubai World Cup Committee, of the filly's withdrawal.

"Obviously we are extremely disappointed that such a top class filly such as Petrushka has been forced to withdrawn from the Dubai World Cup," Benton said.

"However our primary concern is always the welfare of the horse and while we are disappointed we do sympathise with connections of Petrushka and her trainer and wish them every success in the future."

Count Konrad Goess-Saurau today announced the cancellation of this year's Marlborough Cup timber race meeting which was scheduled to take place on Sunday 27 May at Barbury racecourse, near Marlborough.

"The Temple Farm land adjoining the Marlborough Cup course has been grazed by sheep outside our ownership which have tragically tested positive for foot and mouth disease; which means that the land must be quarantined for six months.

"It is very sad that we have had to cancel the event this year, particularly with the new amateur timber race having attracted such a lot of early interest. But, having been directly in the firing line at Temple Farm, I am appalled at the incompetence of MAFF and the arrrogance of the racing authorities in continuing to race. The whole experience has confirmed my opinion that the situation is running dangerously close to a national emergency and that racing should not be taking place anywhere until the outbreak has been curbed.

"We must support the farmers in any way we can to reduce the risk of spreading this disease further," ends Count Goess-Saurau.

The Marlborough Cup is the only all-timber cross country horse race meeting to be held in the UK and is run under Jockey Club rules. The showcase event is worth £15,000 to the winner which last year went to Linton Rocks trained by Paul Nicholls and ridden by National Hunt jockey, Joe Tizzard.

Festival Of Light showed at Nad Al Sheba last Sunday night that he may well be one of the stars for Godolphin in 2001 judging by his runaway victory over former stablemate Glad Master.

In a performance of a top class racehorse, Festival Of Light graduated from Maiden company to open class but whether he now goes into a race like the Group III Godolphin Mile on March 24 remains to be seen.

Jumping quickly to the front, Festival Of Light went further in front at the top of the straight and was eased right down on the line to win by 10 lengths over Glad Master with Meshty over three lengths away third.

Festival Of Light arrived in the Emirates as a Maiden after a campaign in America last season but is clearly a horse who has improved with maturity.

Earlier in the night Erwan Charpy continued his good recent form when dominating the 00-100 handicap, his three runners finishing in the first four placings with Bahamian Bandit retuning to winning form with his victory over stablemate Razik.

Jeff Frazier-trained Purebred Arabian Al Reef turned in a sterling trial for the US$250,000 Group I Dubai Kahayla Classic on Dubai World Cup night when second to the outstanding Mushaagib in the Conditions event.

Mushaagib ended his season with his fifth consecutive win, his only defeat coming on his reappearance when unsuited by the distance, and he took his career total to nine wins from 11 starts.

Al Reef however impressed with his second, getting to the line strongly and the extra 700m of the Dubai Kahayla Classic will be ideal. It is also significant to note that at this meeting last season, albeit over 1,800m, Nivour de Cardonne defeated Gerbya, the same two that finished one-two in the Dubai Kahayla Classic a fortnight later.

Sir Michael Stoute's two stars Petrushka and No Excuse Needed both galloped between races to get the feel of Nad Al Sheba at night, a practice he used to good effect at the corresponding meeting last year when Fantastic Light worked between races.

That horse went on to win the Group III Dubai Sheema Classic before going on to become the second Emirates World Series Racing Championship winner.

Petrushka worked over 1,600m in 1:40 with a final 800m in 48.28 and a final 200m in 12.37 seconds.

Stablemate No Excuse Needed, being readied for the US$2million Group III UAE Derby, was impressive in his gallop over 1,400m covering the journey in 1:30.3 and a final 200m in 11 seconds.

Welcome Friend, a leading fancy for the randombet.com Lincoln Handicap has been ruled out of the contest by trrainer Roger Charlton.

The Beckhampton handler reported today: "He is fairly prominent in the betting and I thought it fair to punters not to leave a decision until the last minute.

The Kingmambo colt had been trading at 16/1 with William Hill for the first leg of the Spring Double.
