STATE SHINTO GIVES AL KURDI A MAKTOUM CHALLENGE DOUBLE

De Kock - Marwing Double

State Shinto, gave trainer Mazin Al Kurdi a treble for the evening, when winning the Shadwell sponsored first round of the Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum Challenge (Gr.III) for Thoroughbreds, at the opening meeting of the Dubai International Racing Carnival at Nad Al Sheba on Thursday.

Partnered by Ryan Moore, State Shinto raced in mid-division, with the field being taken along by the Ted Durcan-ridden Conflict, Jerry Barton's Fabria was also going well. Into the straight, race favourite Victory Moon was towards the rear with jockey Weichong Marwing getting to work on the 2003 UAE Derby winner.

At the 400 metre pole Willie Supple aboard Dubai Honor came to take the lead along with Tropical Star, looking for his fourth Nad Al Sheba win on the bounce. State Shinto was begin a run between horses, while Victory Moon was finding no luck in running on the rail.

State Shinto was switched 300 metres out and ran on well to lead in the final 100 metres, Tropical Star was a closing second beaten only a head with Victory Moon running on well to finish three quarters of a length third.

Mike de Kock's Prince of War became the first overseas trained challenger to land a race in the inaugural Dubai International Racing Carnival, when taking the third race, the Green Desert International Rated Stakes over 2,000 metres on the turf, and in turn gave Mawing his first win at Nad Al Sheba

The field were taken along by the Mark Johnston-trained Jebal Suraaj, under Stanley Chin, Prince of War was always well placed along with the Swedish Horse of the Year Halfsong. Into the straight Halfsong checked and was eased as Prince of War took the lead at the 400 metre pole and ran on for a one and three quarter length win.

Lodge Keeper, trained in Bahrain by Nicolas de Croutte, came with a late burst of speed to get up for second with the Jeremy Noseda-trained and Michael Kinane-ridden Courageous Duke staying on for third.

Marwing commented after his debut win, "It is a wonderful set up here and I am really looking forward to my season riding here."

De Kock said, "I intend to do well here in the desert, I love it here. After the success of last year we could not wait to get back here as soon as possible. We have brought over 11 horses this time and hope that they will all get a run."

The international success continued in the fourth race, the Derrinstown Stud International Rated Stakes over 1,400 metres with the Rashid Bouresly-trained Bold Demand and Brett Doyle coming late to land a two and a half length win.

Durcan and Northern Rock led at the 400 metre pole and set sail for home but could not catch the fast finishing Bold Demand. The David Loder-trained Royal Dignitary and Jamie Spencer stayed on for third.

San Salvador showed his consistency when coming with a late run to beat the international challengers and land the second race of the evening, the Derrinstown Stud Stakes over 1,200 metres.

The Macau challenger, Elegance Champion, partnered by Frankie Dettori, set the pace but the Al Kurdi-trained San Salvador, under Ted Durcan., was tucked in behind. San Salvador began a run up the rail to lead just after the 200 metre pole and ran on to a two and a half length win. The Swedish challenger, the Diego Lowther-trained Rotulo, under Manuael Santos stayed on for second, with the Hind-partnered Conceal in second. Elegance Champion, was one paced and finished fourth.

De Kock's success continued in the final race of the evening, the Derrinstown Stud Conditions race run over the Dubai Duty Free course and distance of 1,777 metre. Crimson Palace, under Marwing, broke away from the field and ran clear for a four and three quarter length win. In doing so the four-year-old filly broke the track record, set by de Kock's 2003 Dubai Duty Free winner Ipi Tombe.

After the race de Kock quipped, "We have found the next Ipi Tombe!"

Gateman, trained by Johnston was a sound second with Al Kurdi's Hero's Journey in third. Hind and Velte made all to win the opening race of the evening, the Shadwell sponsored Round one of the Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum Challenge (Gr.I) over 1,600 metres for Purebred Arabians.

Trained by Al Kurdi, Velte was settled in front, at the 400 metres post Khoutoubia, under Doyle, race favourite Kaolino, the mount of Hills and the Durcan-partnered Van Nistelrooy all came with a challenge, with Khoutoubia getting the closest. Hind pushed Velte on for a three quarter of a length win.

After the race Hind said, "Nice way to start the carnival. He is a free running sort and the key is to settle him. The second horse Khoutoubia is a good horse, it was a good finish."
