TREMENDOUS ENTRIES FOR CHAMPIONSHIP NOVICE HURDLES

Record entries are announced today by Cheltenham Racecourse for the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle, while the JCB Triumph Hurdle has a strong challenge from France and Germany.

The £90,000 Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, the opening race of the 2002 National Hunt Festival at 2pm on Tuesday, March 12, has attracted 156 entries, an increase of 17 on the previous record entry of 139 seen last year.

The £90,000 Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle, the first race on the second day, Wednesday, March 13, has 169 entries as against the previous record of 160 in 2001.

JCB is the new sponsor of the JCB Triumph Hurdle, which has 103 entries, and the French, with four contenders, hold a powerful hand, while German trainer Christian von der Recke, who saddled his first British winner with Eluna at Warwick on January 24, is hoping the same British-bred filly can go on to victory at Cheltenham on Thursday, March 14.

The Irish-trained entry numbers in both the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle are at record levels, with 46 and 40 respectively. Both totals are two higher than the previous records established last year. There are also 21 Irish-trained hopes in the £90,000 JCB Triumph Hurdle.

Miros, the German-bred who is trained by Jonjo O’Neill not far from Cheltenham, is already the strong ante-post favourite for the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, the championship novice hurdle over two miles and half a furlong, having won his last three races. He scored an impressive victory in the Grade 1 Gerrard Tolworth Hurdle, transferred to Warwick from Sandown on January 12.

Champion jump trainer Martin Pipe has entered an incredible 32 horses for the Gerrard Supreme, double his tally last year, and is obviously determined to follow up his victories with Hors La Loi III (1999) and Sondrio (1989). Among the potential challengers are Westender, who has already shown his liking for Cheltenham with two handicap victories there this season, and the German-bred Samon, who is owned by footballers Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman and made a winning hurdling debut at Taunton on January 17. Miros and Samon have also been entered in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle.

Classified, one of Pipe’s 21 entries in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle, currently heads the betting for this championship event over two miles and five furlongs, after running up a sequence of three hurdle victories and two bumper successes.

Irish owner J P McManus likes nothing better than to have a National Hunt Festival winner and the Christy Roche-trained Like-A-Butterfly has strong credentials, being unbeaten in three bumpers and three hurdles. Like-A-Butterfly is also entered in the Gerrard Supreme.

Scottish-trained winners at the National Hunt Festival are relatively rare but The Bajan Bandit, handled by Len Lungo, has good arguments in his favour, also being unbeaten, with two hurdle wins and four bumper victories.

Tempo D’Or put his JCB Triumph Hurdle aspirations to the test on Saturday in Cheltenham’s Wragge & Co Finesse Hurdle after being backed down to market leader following his first British outing at Chepstow in a Grade 1 on December 27 when the Guillaume Macaire-trained four-year-old beat a fair field.

Fellow French trainer Francois Doumen, responsible for the last Triumph Hurdle winner in Snow Drop, has Kelami and Wesley Snype this time, while Phillippe Boisgontier sent out Great Love to win very easily at Pau in South-West France on January 20.

The longest-priced winners of the Triumph Hurdle have been returned at 66/1 and two of them, Baron Blakeney (1981) and Shiny Copper (1982), were trained by Martin Pipe and Dina Smith respectively. While Pipe, who has gone on to break every jump training record, has 12 entries, the highest of any trainer, Smith, who returned to training in 2000 after a 12-year break, has two hopes, Mister Putt and Photographer, both of whom have yet to win over hurdles.

Edward Gillespie, Cheltenham’s Managing Director, said today: “The Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle opens the National Hunt Meeting and is probably the most eagerly-awaited race in the calendar. All three novice hurdle championships have a tremendous international interest and it is great to welcome a new sponsor to racing in JCB.”

GERRARD SUPREME NOVICES’ HURDLE FACTS AND FIGURES

1. The Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle was known as the Gloucestershire Hurdle until 1974. Capel Cure Sharp backed the contest for a first time in 2000 and the company is now known as Gerrard. It is the fifth sponsor since the initial backer Lloyds Bank in 1974.

2. The Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle is the only race at the Festival to have been divided. From 1948-1971,it divided on no less than 24 occasions. In 1963, there were even three divisions.

3. The oldest horse to have won was 12-year-old Beau Caprice in 1966 (Div One).

4. The 1993 winner, Montelado, holds a unique position in the history of the National Hunt Festival at Cheltenham. He is the only horse to have won consecutive races at the Festival, through winning the Weatherbys Champion Bumper in 1992, the last race of that year’s meeting, and returning to win the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle in 1993, 12 months later, the first race of that year's meeting.

5. The Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle has thrown up one winner of the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup and one winner of the Smurfit Champion Hurdle. L'Escargot won in 1968, before consecutive Gold Cup triumphs in 1970 and 1971. Bula won in 1970, before Champion Hurdle victories in 1971 and 1972.

6. The race has been won by Irish-trained raiders on no less than 32 occasions, and by the French once. Of the 16 divisions of the race from 1952-9, Vincent O'Brien won ten. The Irish also kept a stranglehold on the race for seven years from 1977-83.

7. The smallest field was in 1950, with nine runners in Division 1, and the largest, 30 runners, for both Harry Hastings' win in 1985 and French Ballerina in 1998.

8. Since the race ceased to be divided, jockeys have found the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle difficult to win. Tony McCoy, successful on Hors La Loi III in 1999, is the only one of the last four champion jockeys to have scored in this particular contest, and only Tommy Carmody (1980 and 1983) and Niall Madden (1978 and 1981) have been successful twice.

9. The longest-priced winner was Arctic Kinsman at 50/1 in 1994. The shortest-priced winners at 4/9 were Tsaoko in 1950 and Flyingbolt in 1964.

10. The fastest time for the winning horse was achieved by Montelado in 1993 at 3 mins 50.6 secs. French Ballerina came close to that record in 1998 when her time was 3 mins 50.9 secs.

GERRARD SUPREME NOVICES' HURDLE
Analysis

The £90,000 Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle has the honour of opening the 2002 National Hunt Festival and this year the ultra-competitive extended two-mile contest has attracted a record 156 entries, 17 more than the previous best.

The last winner of the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle was Sausalito Bay, successful in 2000 for Irish-based trainer Noel Meade, and this year the contest has received a record 46 entries from the Emerald Isle.

Like-A-Butterfly, trained by Christy Roche, has an outstanding chance of giving the Ireland its sixth winner of this race since 1991 if she lines up. The Montelimar mare, who is also entered in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle, is unbeaten after six racecourse outings, including the Grade 1 Royal Bond Novices’ Hurdle at Fairyhouse on December 2, when she proved four lengths too good for Sacundai.

County Carlow-based trainer Willie Mullins won this prestigious event in 1995 with Tourist Attraction and he is well represented with eight entries. Principal among them could be Adamant Approach, who was victorious on his last start in the valuable Pierse Handicap Hurdle at Leopardstown on January 13, where he beat Native Scout by one-and-a-half lengths, and Heezapistol, a winner of a Grade 3 juvenile hurdle at Punchestown on January 19.

Both entries from France are provided by Francois Doumen. He will be hoping that either Barito, who won a novices’ hurdle at Kempton on Boxing Day by a short-head from Island Sound on his British debut, or Never, winner of the Grade 2 Gerrard Novices’ Hurdle at Ascot by four lengths from Image De Marque II just before Christmas, can become the first French-trained winner of the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle since Tasmin took the second division in 1954.

Champion trainer Martin Pipe was the last home-based handler to send out the winner of this event when he was successful with Hors La Loi III in 1999. Ten years earlier Sondrio had given him his first victory in the contest.

The Nicholashayne-based trainer has entered 32 horses this time, double his tally last year, including Westender, a winner of two handicap hurdles at Cheltenham this season, Samon, a German-bred gelding who won his first start in Britain in a novices’ hurdle at Taunton on January 17 by three-and-a-half lengths from Isio, and Golden Alpha, who has won two of his first three starts over hurdles this season for owner David Johnson.

Other notable entries include the Jonjo O’Neill-trained Miros, who has gone from strength-to-strength after being pulled up at Stratford on his seasonal debut winning his last three including the Grade 1 Gerrard Tolworth Hurdle at Warwick, Hitman, who might well have been entered for the Smurfit Champion Hurdle if entries hadn’t already closed before his smooth five-length victory over First Love at Ascot on January 12, and Got One Too, whose four successes this term include the Grade 2 Gerry Feilden Intermediate Handicap Hurdle at Newbury on December 1.

A dark horse among the entries could be Irish Hussar, one of 13 Nicky Henderson-trained possibles. Held in high regard by his trainer, he was very impressive when winning his sole start last season by eight lengths from Beethoven in a Sandown bumper and the six-year-old looks just the sort to make a big impression when turning his hand to hurdling.

Owner: J F O'Malley Trainer: John Bleahen IRE
Last season Canary Wharf’s two victories came in bumpers at Thurles and Fairyhouse. Also entered in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle.

533 CASHEL BAY (USA) 4 b h Nureyev - Madame Premier (Raja Baba)
Owner: Luke Comer Trainer: Luke Comer IRE

12-1F5 DAVENPORT MILENIUM (IRE) 6 b g Insan - Society Belle (Callernish)
Owner: Mrs Noel O'Callaghan Trainer: Willie Mullins IRE
Davenport Milenium was one of Willie Mullins’ top bumper horses last season, winning by seven lengths at Leopardstown on his racecourse debut last February. The Insan gelding also made a winning debut over hurdles at Fairyhouse in December and he was only beaten five lengths by Canary Wharf in a Grade 3 novices’ hurdle at Naas on January 6. Also entered in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle.

1- DIRECT BEARING (IRE) 5 b g Polish Precedent - Uncertain Affair (Darshaan)
Owner: Michael Smurfit Trainer: Dermot Weld IRE
Direct Bearing has done nothing wrong so far having won his only National Hunt racecourse outing in a Fairyhouse bumper in January, 2001, when he beat Prince Of Tara by a short-head. Also entered in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle.

1 FIND THE KING (IRE) 4 b g King’s Theatre - Undiscovered (Tap On Wood)
Owner: J S Gutkin Trainer: Edward O'Grady IRE

111115 GOLDEN ROW (IRE) 8 b g Ore-Guelder Rose (Trimmingham)
Owner: W Roche Trainer: Charles Byrnes IRE
Since winning his maiden hurdle at Navan in May, Golden Row has been a revelation, winning six further hurdles, including a Grade 3 novices’ event at the same track in November. Stepped up to Grade 1 level at Fairyhouse the following month on his last start he was no match for Like-A-Butterfly, beaten 16 lengths by that rival.

11 GOSS 5 b g Linamix - Guillem (Nijinsky)
Owner: J P McManus Trainer: Michael O'Brien IRE
Goss has taken to hurdles really well and remains unbeaten after two outings. After winning a maiden hurdle by five lengths at Punchestown in early November, he followed up later that month in a Naas hurdle, beating Executive Ben by four-and-a-half lengths on his last start.

1-421 GROUND BALL (IRE) 5 b/br g Bob’s Return - Bettyhill (Ardross)
Owner: J P McManus Trainer: Charlie Swan IRE
A winner of his only start last season in a Cork bumper, Ground Ball got off the mark at the third attempt over hurdles, winning a novices’ contest at Navan on January 12, beating Bassett Tiger by 12 lengths. Also entered in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle.

161 HEEZAPISTOL (FR) 4 b g Pistolet Bleu - Strictly Cool (Bering)
Owner: Amber Syndicate Trainer: Willie Mullins IRE
Heezapistol won a three-year-old maiden hurdle at Down Royal in November. After one unplaced outing in a Grade 3 event at Fairyhouse in December, the son of Pistolet Bleu proved that he was up to that level by winning a Grade 3 juvenile hurdle at Punchestown on January 19, beating Newhall by three-and-a-half lengths. Also entered in the JCB Triumph Hurdle.

4124 HYDERABAD 4 ch h Deploy - Ajuga (The Minstrel)
Owner: Sir Anthony O'Reilly Trainer: Mouse Morris IRE
The Mouse Morris-trained Hyderabad easily won a three-year-old hurdle on his second start over timber on heavy ground at Thurles in December. On his last start he was beaten 10 lengths by Heezapistol in a Grade 3 juvenile hurdle on January 19, at Punchestown. Also entered in the JCB Triumph Hurdle.

2141 IN THE FORGE 5 ch g Zilzal - Harir (Kris)
Owner: Margaret Gannon Trainer: Michael Halford IRE
After winning a Roscommon bumper in September, trainer Michael Halford described In The Forge as a horse with a future. He then came good over hurdles at the third time of asking, winning a maiden hurdle by six lengths at Navan just before Christmas on his last start.

111-111 LIKE-A-BUTTERFLY (IRE) 8 b m Montelimar - Swifts Butterfly (Furry Glen)
Owner: J P McManus Trainer: Christy Roche IRE
The unbeaten Like-A-Butterfly has an outstanding chance of winning this contest if connections choose to run her. She won three bumpers last season and during the current campaign her three hurdle victories include the Grade 1 Royal Bond Novices’ Hurdle at Fairyhouse on December 2. Also entered in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle.

41 MURRAYFIELD (USA) 5 b g Ghazi - Hawaiian Comic (Doonesbury)
Owner: DG Syndicate Trainer: Dermot Weld IRE
Murrayfield was all the better for his first start in a maiden hurdle at Gowran Park in October when fourth and won a similar event at Leopardstown after Christmas on his only other start over timber denying Ground Ball by three-quarters-of-a-length.

MUTAKARRIM 5 ch g Mujtahid - Alyakkh (Sadler’s Wells)
Owner: Michael Smurfit Trainer: Dermot Weld IRE
Five-year-old Mutakarrim won five times during his Flat career, including a Listed race on his last racecourse outing at Galway in September. He changed hands for 135,000gns at Tattersalls in October and is likely to be a high-class recruit to the jumping game. He has yet to appear in public over hurdles. Also entered in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle.

011212 NATIVE SCOUT (IRE) 6 b g Be My Native - Carmels Castle (Deep Run)
Owner: M P Hogan Trainer: Donal Hassett IRE
Native Scout’s bumper victory at Killarney in May was the beginning of a highly-productive season which has encompassed three hurdle successes. Although beaten on his last start, the Be My Native gelding was far from disgraced in finishing the runner-up to Adamant Approach in the Grade A Pierse Handicap Hurdle at Leopardstown on January 13, when giving 4lb to the winner.

15-1314 ONE NIGHT OUT (IRE) 6 b/br g Jamesmead - Deladeuce (Le Bavard)
Owner: Roderick Ryan Trainer: Willie Mullins IRE
The winner of two bumpers got his head in front on his second outing over hurdles. That maiden hurdle success at Punchestown in December was followed by a fourth on his last start behind Like-A-Butterfly in a Leopardstown novices’ hurdle on December 28. Also entered in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle.

13-113 OVER THE BAR (IRE) 6 b/br g King’s Ride - Merry Madness (Raise You Ten)
Owner: J P McManus Trainer: Edward O'Grady IRE
Over The Bar won a Grade 3 novices’ hurdle by six lengths on his debut over timber at Navan in November and followed up in a similar event at the same track the following month. Early this year he met with his first reverse over hurdles, finding Canary Wharf half-a-length too good when third in another Grade 3 novices’ hurdle at Naas on his last outing. Also entered in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle.

6521U PETERSHAM 5 b h Petardia - Hayhurst (Sandhurst Prince)
Owner: The Hon Mrs S Lawson Trainer: Michael O'Brien IRE
The Michael O’Brien-trained Petersham was unable to win over hurdles until his fourth start in a maiden hurdle at Cork early this year where he easily justified favouritism to score by six lengths. He was prevented from following-up when unseating his rider coming to the second-last in a novices’ hurdle at Navan a week later.

11 POLAR VISTA (IRE) 6 b g Lashkari - Winter Wonderland (Town And Country)
Owner: BG Partnership Limited Trainer: Edward O'Grady IRE
Lightly-raced Polar Vista has done nothing wrong in his short, but fruitful racecourse career. First he won a Cork bumper in May and he remained unbeaten when appearing over hurdles for the first time in a maiden hurdle at Limerick just after Christmas, beating Just In Debt by six lengths. Also entered in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle.

401/5-21 POLLARDSFIELD (IRE) 7 b g Arcane - The Dara Queen (Dara Monarch)
Owner: Mrs C Neilan Trainer: Pat Flynn IRE
Any Pat Flynn representative must be highly-respected as he has twice before won this event. An earlier winner of two bumpers, Pollardsfield improved from a second in a maiden hurdle at Thurles in early December to win a Tramore hurdle on his last start on January 17, by 11 lengths from Lincam.

F21231 RATHGAR BEAU (IRE) 6 b/br g Beau Sher - Salerina (Orchestra)
Owner: One-O-Eight Racing Club Trainer: Eamon Sheehy IRE
A winner of a bumper on his racecourse debut in December, 2000, Rathgar Beau made his debut over hurdles in October, getting his head in front at the third attempt in a maiden hurdle at Thurles the following month. He returned to the same track to gain his second success over timber on his last start in a novices hurdle on January 3.

15121 SACUNDAI (IRE) 5 b g Hernando - Shahdiza (Blushing Groom)
Owner: Malm Syndicate Trainer: Edward O'Grady IRE
Sacundai was placed ninth in the 2000 Derby Italiano on the Flat and looked a useful recruit to jumping when winning on his debut in a maiden hurdle at Tipperary on May 25. Two further victories, including most recently an eight-length rout of the opposition in a Grade 2 novices’ hurdle at Leopardstown over Christmas make the five-year-old a very interesting prospect. Also entered in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle.

0121 SCOLARDY (IRE) 4 b g Turtle Island - Emerald Pendant (Nebos)
Owner: David Flynn Trainer: Willie Mullins IRE
The Willie Mullins-trained Scolardy has won two of his four starts this term. After taking a maiden hurdle at Thurles in November, he returned to the same track to win another event over timber on January 3, by 14 lengths from Emperors Guest. Also entered in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle and the JCB Triumph Hurdle.

2 SCOTTISH MEMORIES (IRE) 6 ch g Houmayoun - Interj (Salmon Leap)
Owner: Mary Halligan Trainer: Noel Meade IRE
Another former high-class runner on the level, Scottish Memories was good enough to win a Listed race at The Curragh in 1999. On his sole start to date over timber, he finished the runner-up to Ballyhampshire Boy in a maiden hurdle at Fairyhouse on December 1. Also entered in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle.

311160 SNOB WELLS (IRE) 5 b h Sadler’s Wells - Galitizine (Riverman)
Owner: Des Sharkey Trainer: Noel Meade IRE
Unable to win any of his first three starts in maiden hurdles, Snob Wells made no mistake at the fourth time of asking winning at Roscommon in August. The son of Sadler’s Wells has subsequently won two handicap hurdles at Tralee and Listowel respectively.

2-12423 SOLTERO (IRE) 6 ch g Good Thyne - Golden Ambition (Torus)
Owner: Augustus Moon Syndicate Trainer: Jessica Harrington IRE
A previous bumper winner, who won his maiden hurdle at the first attempt, the Jessica Harrington-trained Soltero has run well since finishing in the first four on all four outings without getting his head in front. Beaten 22 lengths by Ballyhampshire Boy when third at Punchestown on his last start in a novices’ hurdle on December 9.

1 TENDER COVE (IRE) 4 b g Balla Cove - Fair Tender (Tender King)
Owner: Cabin Hill Syndicate Trainer: Paddy Mullins IRE
Former Flat horse Tender Cove is still something of an unknown quantity having done nothing wrong when winning his only start in a maiden hurdle at Naas on January 6, defeating Mind Over Matter by two-and-a-half lengths.

12 THARI (USA) 5 b g Silver Hawk - Magic Slipper (Habitat)
Owner: Des Sharkey Trainer: Noel Meade IRE
Another lightly-raced type, Thari won his first start over jumps in a maiden hurdle at Leopardstown on Boxing Day. He could have remained unbeaten on his last outing but went down by a short-head to Canary Wharf in a Grade 3 novices’ hurdle at Naas on January 6. Also entered in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle.

113135 THE BALTIMORE MAN (IRE) 6 ch g Phardante - Gentle Lass (Cardinal Flower)
Owner: Mrs A F Mee Trainer: Tony Mullins IRE
The Baltimore Man has been successful over hurdles on four occasions this season. His most notable victory came in a handicap hurdle at Galway in September when he beat Blue, who was in receipt of 18lb, by four lengths.

2-1511 TRUE BLUE VICTORY (IRE) 6 b g Catrail - Russian Ribbon (Nijinsky)
Owner: William Entenmann Trainer: Ted Walsh IRE
Second on his only start in a hurdle last season, True Blue Victory scored on his seasonal debut in a maiden hurdle in November at Clonmel. Having subsequently entered handicap company, the Catrail gelding has won two of his three starts at Fairyhouse and Leopardstown respectively in December.

1 TURTLEBACK (IRE) 4 b g Turtle Island - Mimicry (Thatch)
Owner: Dermot Desmond Trainer: Edward O'Grady IRE
Turtleback produced a very smart hurdling debut when winning a three-year-old event at Leopardstown on December 27, where he was eight lengths too good for Scolardy. Also entered in the JCB Triumph Hurdle.

132 WOODYS DEEP OCEAN (IRE) 6 b g Be My Native - Von Carty (Supreme Leader)
Owner: Mrs P Sloan Trainer: Noel Meade IRE
A winner of a bumper on his National Hunt debut at Ounchestown in November, Woodys Deep Ocean then finished third in a similar event at Fairyhouse. The Be My Native gelding made his hurdling debut at Leopardstown on Boxing Day, finishing the one-length runner-up to Georgies Best.

325/-112 YEOMAN'S POINT (IRE) 6 b g Sadler’s Wells - Truly Bound (In Reality)
Owner: J P McManus Trainer: Christy Roche IRE
Placed twice over hurdles two seasons ago, Yeoman’s Point won his first two starts over timber at Gowran Park and Fairyhouse this term. Stepped up in class, he then finished the runner-up to Sacundai in a Grade 2 novices’ hurdle at Leopardstown on December 27. Also entered in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle.

FRENCH-TRAINED ENTRIES IN THE GERRARD SUPREME NOVICE’ HURDLE

121301 BARITO (GER) 5 b g Winged Love - Blumme (Jadar)
Owner: Michaela Faust Trainer: Francois Doumen FR
French trainer Francois Doumen had had Barito for less than two months before he made a winning debut in Britain in a Kempton novices’ hurdle on Boxing Day. Apparently he had been having trouble settling but jockey Thierry Doumen managed to get him to relax at Kempton. A previous winner in Germany and Italy, he looks to be a top-class prospect. Also entered in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle.

411 NEVER (FR) 5 b g Vettori - Neraida (Giboulee)
Owner: Sir Peter O'Sullevan Trainer: Francois Doumen FR
Owned by former BBC commentator, Sir Peter O’Sullevan, Never has won two of his three racecourse starts for French trainer Francois Doumen, including the Grade 2 Gerrard Novices’ Hurdle at Ascot just before Christmas. That success proved that he can handle British hurdles and he looks a fine prospect.

ROYAL & SUNALLIANCE NOVICES’ HURDLE FACTS AND FIGURES

1. The Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle was introduced to the National Hunt Meeting in 1971 as the Aldsworth Hurdle. Sun Alliance, who merged with Royal Insurance in 1996, took it on in 1974, together with the Sun Alliance Chase, having previously sponsored the Foxhunters' Chase.

2. The Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle and Chase are acknowledged as the championship races for the staying novice hurdler and chaser.

3. Only one horse has won both Royal & SunAlliance races. The West Awake took the Hurdle in 1987 and the Chase a year later.

4. The smallest field for the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle was 14 in 2000, when there were three non-runners. Previously the lowest number of runners was 15 in 1973, the year of Willie Wumpkins, who later dominated the Coral Golden Hurdle Final at the Festival with three straight wins from 1979-81. The largest field was 29, achieved in 1979, 1984 and 1991.

5. The 1994 winner, Danoli, was the subject of a massive gamble by the Irish and was sent off at 7/4 favourite. The shortest-priced winner was another Irish victor, Mr Kildare at 8/11 in 1978. The longest-priced winner was 40/1 chance Even Dawn in the second running in 1972.

6. Five of the last 13 winners won the Michael Page Technology Novices’ Trial Hurdle at Warwick in mid-February (February 16 this year) en route to the race. These are Rebel Song (1988), Sayfar's Lad (1989), Thetford Forest (1992), Putty Road (1995) and Monsignor in 2000.

7. The Irish have an excellent record in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle with 11 wins, including six consecutive victories from 1973-78. Aidan O’Brien has won the race twice with Urubande (1996) and Istabraq (1997).

8. Aidan O’Brien, Martin Pipe, Oliver Sherwood, Mick O'Toole and Edward O'Grady have each won two Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdles. Oliver Sherwood holds a unique position as the only trainer to have won the race as a jockey also, on Venture To Cognac in 1979. His training wins were with The West Awake (1987) and Rebel Song (1988).

9. The fastest time for the winning horse was 4m 52.0s set by Monsignor in 2000, beating the 4m 56.2s of Regal Ambition in 1990.

ROYAL & SUNALLIANCE NOVICES' HURDLE
Analysis

The Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle regularly attracts a huge entry but the championship two mile, five furlong event has never before had as many horses engaged as the 169 in this year’s race.

Champion trainer Martin Pipe also has a new best of 21 entries which include the ante-post favourite Classified, who completed a five-timer at Warwick on January 12 when beating Eurotrek by eight lengths, German Flat winner Samon, who made a winning debut at Taunton on January 17 in the colours of footballers Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman, Tarxien, who is unbeaten in six starts this season, Golden Alpha, a 14-length winner at Wincanton on January 19, Shemdani, who made a winning debut at Doncaster on Friday, January 25, and high-class French import Stormez.

Nicky Henderson is hot on Pipe’s heels with 19 entries, among them Valerio, a Wincanton bumper winner who has finished second twice this season most recently behind Claymore at Fontwell on January 7, the Queen Mother’s Deoch An Dorais, high-class bumper performer Calling Brave, Cullen Bay, a winner at Fontwell on January 22, Irish Hussar, eight-length winner of a Sandown bumper on March 10, Jericho III, who scored at Huntingdon on January 11, and Non So, a winner at Fontwell on January 22.

Ireland’s 40-strong challenge appears to be headed by the Christy Roche-trained mare Like-A-Butterfly, who has yet to taste defeat in six starts, most recently when proving half a length too good for Pietro Vanucci at Leopardstown on December 28.

Others with high-class form include Canary Wharf, who beat Shari by a short head at Naas on January 6 with Over The Bar just behind in third, Polar Vista, six-length winner of a Limerick maiden hurdle on December 28, Ballyhampshire Boy, a dual bumper and hurdle winner this season who came fourth to Sacundai at Leopardstown on December 27, the 2000 St Leger third and Smurfit Champion Hurdle entry Chimes At Midnight, who has yet to run over hurdles, a comment that also applies to Galway Listed winner Mutakarrim, who returned to Dermot Weld’s stable in new ownership after making 135,000gns at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sales, and 2000 Queen’s Vase winner Dalampour, who joined Ted Walsh after making 100,000gns at the same auction.

Francois Doumen supplies the two French-trained entries, Barito, winner of a novices’ hurdle at Kempton on Boxing Day, and Laveron, who finished second to Tarxien at Ascot on December 22.

There is a strong home team including the Noel Chance-trained Beethoven, who beat Nicky Henderson’s duo Chauvinist and Hersov at Ascot on December 21, The Bajan Bandit, arguably last season’s top bumper performer and unbeaten in two novice hurdle outings, the Josh Gifford-trained Rouble, 11-length winner of a Grade 2 novices’ hurdle at Sandown on December 7, Keen Leader, who has yet to taste defeat in three starts for Jonjo O’Neill, who has also entered Miros, ante-post favourite for the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, while Farmer Jack, trained by Seamus Mullins, was impressive when beating Chauvinist by 13 lengths in a 2m 4f hurdle at Ascot on January 12.

IRISH-TRAINED ENTRIES IN THE ROYAL & SUNALLIANCE NOVICES’ HURDLE

2-15241 ADAMANT APPROACH (IRE) 8 b g Mandalus-Crash Approach (Crash Course)
Owner: Greenstar Syndicate Trainer: Willie Mullins
A winner of a Leopardstown bumper in February, 2000, he won his maiden over hurdles at Fairyhouse in October and then gained his second victory over timber in the valuable Pierse Handicap Hurdle at Leopardstown on his last start on January 13. Also entered in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle.

31 ATLANTIC RHAPSODY (FR) 5 b g Machiavellian - First Waltz (Green Dancer)
Owner: Atlantic Racing Limited Trainer: Ted Walsh
Formerly trained on the Flat by Mark Johnston, Atlantic Rhapsody was good enough to win a maiden hurdle at the second time of asking, beating Taranges by a head at Punchestown on January 9 for new trainer Ted Walsh. Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

16-4231 BALLYAMBER (IRE) 7 b g Glacial Storm-El Scarsdale (Furry Glen)
Owner: David Doane Trainer: Willie Mullins
Ballyamber won two bumpers in 2000, but it was not until December that the Glacial Storm gelding gained his first victory over hurdles in a maiden at Punchestown when six lengths too good for Good Vintage. He had been placed on his two previous starts over fences. Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

311114 BALLYHAMPSHIRE BOY (IRE) 6 b g Husyan - Dante’s Ville (Phardante)
Owner: Kilmeadan Racing Syndicate Trainer: Sean Aherne IRE
An excellent recruit to the winter game this season, Ballyhampshire Boy won two bumpers before winning his maiden hurdle and a novices’ hurdle at Fairyhouse and Punchestown respectively. He finished fourth in a Grade 2 novices’ hurdle at Leopardstown over Christmas on his last outing. Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

312F11 BEEF OR SALMON (IRE) 6 ch g Cajetano - Farinella (Salmon Leap)
Owner: B J Craig Trainer: Michael Hourigan
A winner between the flags in Ireland, Beef Or Salmon has won two bumpers in impressive fashion at Clonmel in November and Cork earlier this month. On his first start over hurdles, Beef Or Salmon fell two out at Limerick on Boxing Day and won at Gowran Park on January 24.

5/P-1421 BIRMAYNE (IRE) 7 b g Supreme Leader - Anns Touch (Ragapan)
Owner: Pierse Contracting Limited Trainer: Edward O'Grady
Won a bumper at Clonmel in May 2001 and subsequently sent over hurdles. After shaping with promise on his first two starts in maidens in December, he relished the step up to 2m 6f when triumphant at Fairyhouse on January 5.

1262312 BONEYARROW (IRE) 6 ch g Over The River - Apicat (Buckskin)
Owner: Joseph Comerford Trainer: Willie Mullins IRE
A winner of a bumper at the first time of asking at Tralee in September, Boneyarrow began his hurdling career in October but it was not until early in the New Year that he gained that important first success, winning a maiden hurdle at Thurles over two miles and two furlongs. He finished second at Gowran Park on January 25. Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

3331 BRENDAN SHINE (USA) 6 ch g Comet Shine - Rose De France (Ben Fab)
Owner: Sean Mulryan Trainer: Michael O'Brien
Has had four outings in maiden hurdles in Ireland and ran promisingly on each of his first three outings when he was third at Limerick and Leopardstown (twice). He got off the mark on his latest start, winning a maiden hurdle over 2m 3f at Naas on January 6.

411-321 CANARY WHARF (IRE) 6 ch g Accordion - Avida Dancer (Ballymore)
Owner: J F O'Malley Trainer: John Bleahen IRE
Last season Canary Wharf’s two victories came in bumpers at Thurles and Fairyhouse. After reportedly schooling well over hurdles, the six-year-old was all the better for a couple of placed efforts in maiden events and on his last start won a Grade 3 novices’ hurdle at Naas on January 6. Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT (USA) 5 b h Danzig - Surely Georges (Alleged)
Owner: Luke Comer Trainer: Luke Comer
The Luke Comer-owned and trained Chimes At Midnight has yet to appear over hurdles, but has been keeping the best of company on the Flat. Although finishing last four times in nine outings in 2001 on the level, he still managed to win the Group Three Curragh Cup over a mile and three quarters at the Curragh in June beating Mediterranean by two lengths. His best effort was when third to Millenary in the 2000 St Leger at Doncaster. Also entered in the Smurfit Champion Hurdle.

2F2F13 COLUMBA (IRE) 6 b g Lord Americo - Jackson Miss (Condorcet)
Owner: Thomas Winters Trainer: Dessie Hughes IRE
Columba won a maiden hurdle at Fairyhouse on December 12, beating fellow Gerard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle entry Canary Wharf by one-and-a-half lengths. He then finished third, beaten six-and-a-half lengths, to Kadoun in a Limerick hurdle over Christmas. Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

DALAMPOUR (IRE) 5 b h Shernazar - Dalara (Doyoun)
Owner: Cathal M Ryan Trainer: Ted Walsh IRE
A high-class recruit from the Flat, Dalampour won the Group 3 Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot in 2000, when trained by Sir Michael Stoute. Currently unraced over hurdles, he is now based with Irish handler Ted Walsh, after being bought for 100,000gns at Tattersalls by Ryanair director Cathal Ryan in October. Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

12-1F5 DAVENPORT MILENIUM (IRE) 6 b g Insan - Society Belle (Callernish)
Owner: Mrs Noel O'Callaghan Trainer: Willie Mullins IRE
Davenport Milenium was one of Willie Mullins’ top bumper horses last season, winning by seven lengths at Leopardstown on his racecourse debut in February. The Insan gelding also made a winning debut over hurdles at Fairyhouse in December and he was only beaten five lengths by Canary Wharf in a Grade 3 novices’ hurdle at Naas on January 6. Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

1- DIRECT BEARING (IRE) 5 b g Polish Precedent - Uncertain Affair (Darshaan)
Owner: Michael Smurfit Trainer: Dermot Weld IRE
Direct Bearing has done nothing wrong so far, having won his only National Hunt racecourse outing in a Fairyhouse bumper in January, 2001, when he beat Prince Of Tara by a short-head. Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

P00-600 GENGHIS KHAN (IRE) 6 b h Sadler’s Wells - Doff The Derby (Master Derby)
Owner: Luke Comer Trainer: Luke Comer
This Sadler’s Wells half-brother to the 1991 Derby winner Generous once looked to have a promising career on the Flat with Aidan O’Brien. However, that was back in 1999 and Genghis Khan has shown very little for his current handler Luke Comer. He was last seen out when a well-beaten seventh in a handicap hurdle at Navan last May.

023411 GEORGIES BEST (IRE) 6 b g Alaphabatim - Sangan Court (Yashgan)
Owner: Mrs D McMahon Trainer: George McMahon
The only horse handled by Country Kildare-based George McMahon, Georgies Best has been triumphant on two occasions. His two wins came on his two most recent starts, in a bumper at Navan on December 15 when he won easily and in a maiden hurdle at Leopardstown on Boxing Day.

Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

12-5023 INTELLIGENT (IRE) 6 b g Religiously - Culkeern (Master Buck)
Owner: Norman Moore Trainer: Jessica Harrington
Successful on one his seven outings to date, taking a bumper at Punchestown in October, 2000. Began his hurdling career this season and has yet to win over timber, although he has shown a hint of promise in maiden hurdles at Thurles and Naas and looks as if he would be suited by a step up in trip.

152B12 JASMIN D'OUDAIRIES (FR) 5 b g Apeldoorn - Vellea (Cap Martin)
Owner: Decies & Dubs Syndicate Trainer: Willie Mullins
Landed a bumper at Killarney in July and has shown progressive form over hurdles this season. May well have won a maiden hurdle at Naas in November if he had not been brought down at the second last but made amends by getting off the mark in a similar event at Thurles later that month, where he won comfortably. Second in the Mallow Hurdle at Cork on his latest start, where he went down by half-a-length.

002-1 KEW GARDENS 5 ch g Arazi - Hatton Gardens (Auction Ring)
Owner: E Hunston Trainer: Tom Taaffe
Formerly on the Flat with Amanda Perrett in England and won a maiden at Pontefract back in October, 1999. Subsequently sold for 36,000gns to Tom Taaffe and sent hurdling. Took a little while to find his feet over timber but came good with a facile success in a maiden hurdle at Tipperary in May. Has not been seen out since.

22311 KILLULTAGH THUNDER (IRE) 6 b/br g Bravefoot - Rostrevor Lady (Kemal)
Owner: Rose Boyd Trainer: Willie Mullins
A half-brother to the useful chaser Killultagh Storm, Killultagh Thunder has had five outings so far in his career and has won his latest two starts. On December 28 at Leopardstown he landed a bumper and then won on his hurdles debut in a Punchestown maiden on January 9.

Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

541022 LORD EDWARDS ARMY (IRE) 7 b g Warcraft - Celtic Bombshell (Celtic Cone)
Owner: P M Brady Trainer: Paddy Mullins
Handled by the veteran Paddy Mullins, Lord Edwards Army has won three races to date. In July he won two bumpers in succession at Kilbeggan and Bellewstown before being sent over hurdles. He recorded his first victory over timber in September with a smooth win at Listowel. On his latest outing he was second at Naas on November 10.

Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

2063 NOBLE PRINCE (IRE) 5 ch g Nucleon - Burnished Gold (Breton)
Owner: Tom Culhane Trainer: Dessie Hughes
Yet to run over hurdles but has had four runs in bumpers to date, with his best two efforts coming when second on his debut Punchestown in September and when a staying-on third on his latest outing at Naas on January 6.

Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

231311 PERKYS PRIDE (IRE) 6 b g Executive Perk - Josie Mac (Pitpan)
Owner: Frank's Friends Syndicate Trainer: Michael Cunningham
Appears to be a progressive sort and recorded the first success of his career when comfortably taking a bumper at Down Royal in November. On his hurdles debut he was a staying-on third to Ballyhampshire Boy at Fairyhouse on December 3. Since then he has relished the step up in trip, landing a 2m 2f maiden hurdle at Navan on December 22 and a novice hurdle over 2m 6f, also at Navan, on January 12.

2-15122 PIETRO VANNUCCI (IRE) 6 b g Perugino - Lady’s Bridge (Sir Ivor)
Owner: Phonsie O'Brien Trainer: Noel Meade
Owned by Phonsie O’Brien, brother of the great Vincent O’Brien. Finished second in three bumpers last season before getting off the mark in a bumper at Fairyhouse on his seasonal reappearance last October. Since then he has won a maiden hurdle at Naas and ran well on his last two outings, finishing just half a length behind Like-A-Butterfly at Leopardstown on December 28.

Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

01-40 PRINCESS SYMPHONY (IRE) 6 ch m Lashkari - Hemmingford Grey (Sexton Blake)
Owner: Donal Whelan Trainer: Eamon Sheehy
Landed a bumper at Gowran Park in October, 2000, when trained by Michael Cullen. Has run twice for her current handler Eamon Sheehy, finishing a promising fourth in a maiden hurdle at Gowran Park in October before running disappointingly when unplaced in a maiden hurdle at Fairyhouse on October 24.

Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

5/1-214 SATCO EXPRESS (IRE) 6 b g Satco - Rosel Chris (Roselier)
Owner: J B Ryan Trainer: Eamon Sheehy
Won a bumper at Naas in October, 2000, and enjoyed another success in a similar event, again at Naas, in November where he defeated Georgies Best. Made his hurdling debut at Naas on November 24, finishing a promising fourth to Pietro Vannucci.

Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and the JCB Triumph Hurdle.

Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

1 TUCO (IRE) 6 b g Scenic - Tralthee (Tromos)
Owner: Gigginstown House Stud Trainer: David Wachman
Successful in an Irish point-to-point at Tallow before winning his only start to date under Rules, the valuable Goffs Land Rover Bumper at Fairyhouse in May, when winning by a comfortable four and a half lengths with Bar in second and Beef Or Salmon in third. After that victory, trainer David Wachman said that Tuco was a chaser in the making and would not have a busy campaign over hurdles.

r1-45 WATERSHED (IRE) 7 gr g Beau Sher - Jirao (Walshford)
Owner: Thomas Waters Trainer: Sean Treacy
Triumphant in a Gowran Park bumper in June, 2000. Both his runs this season have also been in bumpers and finished fourth at Fairyhouse on December 1 and fifth to Killultagh Thunder at Leopardstown on December 28. Has yet to start over hurdles.

111440 WOODYS BLUE LAGOON (IRE) 8 b g Buckskin - Picton Lass (Rymer)
Owner: Mrs P Sloan Trainer: Noel Meade
Landed a three-timer earlier this season when he won a maiden hurdle at Punchestown, a novice hurdle at Galway and a novice hurdle at Punchestown - all very comfortably. His last three runs have not been so impressive and most recently he was well behind in the Irish National Hunt Novice Hurdle Series at Punchestown.

Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

FRENCH-TRAINED ENTRIES FOR THE 2002 ROYAL & SUNALLIANCE
NOVICES’ HURDLE

121301 BARITO (GER) 5 b g Winged Love - Blumme (Jadar)
Owner: Michaela Faust Trainer: Francois Doumen FR
French trainer Francois Doumen had had Barito for less than two months before he made a winning debut in Britain in a Kempton novices’ hurdle on Boxing Day. Apparently he had been having trouble settling but jockey Thierry Doumen managed to get him to relax at Kempton. A previous winner in Germany and Italy, he looks to be a top-class prospect. Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

32 LAVERON 7 b/br h Konigsstuhl - La Virginia (Surumu)
Owner: Dirk Grauert Trainer: Francois Doumen
A good Flat horse, finishing sixth to Golden Snake in a German Group One at Cologne in September, 2000. Has had two outings over hurdles so far, finishing third at Auteuil on December 2 and two-and-a-half lengths second to Martin Pipe’s Tarxien in a Class B event at Ascot on December 22.

JCB TRIUMPH HURDLE FACTS AND FIGURES

1. The JCB Triumph Hurdle was formerly run at Hurst Park and transferred to Cheltenham in 1965 on the closure of the London course.

2. JCB, which supports the contest for a first time this year, is only the race’s third sponsor. The Elite Racing Club was due to back the race for a fifth time in 2001 while The Daily Express sponsored from 1965 to 1996. The race was originally run at the April Meeting but was transferred to the Festival in 1968.

3. The JCB Triumph Hurdle is one of the most competitive races of the National Hunt Meeting. The field of 23 runners in 1999 was the smallest since Connaught Ranger's win in 1978, and regularly reaches the safety factor of 30. In fact, the 14 runners in Connaught Ranger's year probably had more to do with the transfer of the race to April following the abandonment of racing on Gold Cup Day than any loss of its competitive nature. The smallest field was in its first running at Cheltenham in 1965, when seven runners took part. The largest field was 31 in 1970.

4. Since the race has been at Cheltenham, there has only once been an odds-on winner of the Triumph Hurdle. This was Attivo, owned by former BBC TV commentator, Sir Peter O'Sullevan, in 1973 at 4/5. The longest-priced winners were Baron Blakeney, Shiny Copper and Ikdam at 66/1 in 1981, 1982 and 1989.

5. Two horses have gone on from winning the JCB Triumph Hurdle to victory in the Smurfit Champion Hurdle. Persian War won the Triumph in 1967, and reeled off three Champion Hurdles from 1968-70, while Kribensis won the Triumph in 1988 and the Champion Hurdle in 1990.

6. The JCB Triumph Hurdle has a good record of home-trained winners. The French won it on four consecutive occasions at Hurst Park from 1950-53, again in 1955 and with Snow Drop in 2000. There have only been five Irish successes (1977,1984,1990, 1993 and 1997). No trainer has been able to dominate the race. The late Fred Rimell and Nicky Henderson are the only trainers to have won it three times.

7. Among jockeys, Jimmy Uttley was successful three times. Fred Winter, Steve Smith Eccles and Richard Dunwoody had two winners, but perhaps the most interesting name is that of Lester Piggott, who won the race on King Charlemagne in 1954.

8. The fastest time for the winning horse is 3m 52.90s, set by Snow Drop in 2000. The previous best was the 3m 54.4s recorded by Rare Holiday in 1990.

JCB TRIUMPH HURDLE
Analysis

There is a new sponsor for Cheltenham’s championship juvenile hurdle event, the JCB Triumph Hurdle, and the first running under the new title on Thursday, March 14, promises to be an exciting contest with 103 entries.

The Guillaume Macaire-trained Tempo D’Or, who was due to have run in Saturday’s Wragge & Co Finesse Hurdle at Cheltenham, is one of four French-trained entries and has been well-supported in the ante-post markets since his success from Live The Dream and Hawkes Run in the Finale Junior Hurdle at Chepstow on December 27.

Great Love, a hugely impressive winner at Pau in south west France on Sunday, January 20, represents Philippe Boisgontier, while Francois Doumen has entered the Queen Mother’s Kelami, who finished second to Green Ideal at Newbury on December 19, and Wesley Snype, who was runner-up to Greenhope at Kempton on Boxing Day.

Ireland’s formidable 20-strong team includes Heezapistol, trained by Willie Mullins and winner of the Grade 3 Juvenile Hurdle at Punchestown on January 19, beating Newhall, Cashel Bay and Hyderabad. Heezapistol had finished sixth to Balapour at Fairyhouse the previous month while other entries include Turtleback, who beat Scolardy at Leopardstown on December 27, the Edward O’Grady-trained Find The King, who won by eight lengths on his hurdling debut at Clonmel on December 8, Noel Meade’s three-time winner Pasteur and the Paddy Mullins-trained Tender Cove, winner of a Naas maiden hurdle on January 6.

Christian von der Recke provides the sole German-trained entry, Eluna, a winner at Warwick on Thursday, January 24, on her first visit to Britain.

Martin Pipe, who first sprang to prominence when winning this contest in 1981 with Baron Blakeney, has a dozen entries. These include Londoner, bought for 100,000gns out of Henry Cecil’s yard, and the ante-post JCB Triumph Hurdle favourite until unseating his rider on his hurdling debut behind Burning Impulse at Kempton on Saturday, January 19.

Members of the Pipe team to have already won include Dark Fairy, Dubai Seven Stars, Hernandita, Live The Dream and Trained By The Best. Among those yet to run are Fortune Point, a maiden on the Flat, Canada, winner of handicaps at Ayr and York in June for Barry Hills, and Lunar Crystal, winner of an Ascot juvenile conditions event on his debut for David Elsworth and sold for 18,000gns at Tattersalls’ Autumn Horses In Training Sales.

Londoner is not the only ex-Flat performer with a six-figure price tag - it is Lord Joshua who leads the way after being bought for 130,000gns by David Minton on behalf of the American ambassador Will Farish’s wife Sarah. The winner of a Bath handicap in October for Gerard Butler is one of eight entries for Nicky Henderson.

Henderson’s team is completed by the French-breds Epervier D’Or, Volano, three-time Flat winner Just Muprhy, Green Ideal, Greenhope, Non So, a winner at Fontwell on January 22, and Prizeman, winner of the Listed Washington Singer Stakes on the Flat as a two-year-old.

Paul Nicholls has five entries including Le Roi Miguel, who ran well when second to the year-older Miros in the Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle at Warwick on January 12 and Rigmarole, who won at Wetherby on December 27 before finishing fourth to Burning Impulse at Kempton on January 19

Paul Webber, trainer of Burning Impulse - who cost 120,000gns at the Horses In Training Sales, also has Thurles maiden winner Domenico, a 78,000gns purchase at the same sale, entered.

Sonevafushi beat Riyadh on his British debut at Newbury on January 9, Quazar has won four times for Jonjo O’Neill and Don Cantillon’s Plough Boy has won both his hurdling starts in facile style.

IRISH-TRAINED ENTRIES IN JCB TRIUMPH HURDLE

AQUILA OCULUS (IRE) 4 b f Eagle Eyed - Out In The Sun (It’s Freezing)
Owner: Mrs A F Mee Trainer: Tony Mullins IRE
A winner of four races on the Flat between eight and 12 furlongs last year for Tony Mullins, Aquila Oculus is unraced over hurdles but could be a smart recruit if taking to the winter game.

103100 BALAPOUR (IRE) 4 b g Kahyasi - Balaniya (Diesis)
Owner: Rita Shah Trainer: Oliver Brady IRE
Balapour won at the second time of asking over hurdles in a three-year-old maiden event at Fairyhouse in September. After a couple more runs he was able to do the same again this time winning the Grade 3 Fairyhouse Juvenile Hurdle on December 1. Unplaced twice since.

BEYOND BORDERS (USA) 4 b g Pleasant Colony - Welcome Proposal (Be My Guest)
Owner: Dr Michael Smurfit Trainer: Dermot Weld IRE
No great shakes on the Flat, although he did manage to win an apprentice maiden over 12 furlongs for Dermot Weld, Beyond Borders is unraced over hurdles so far.

533 CASHEL BAY (USA) 4 b h Nureyev - Madame Premier (Raja Baba)
Owner: Luke Comer Trainer: Luke Comer IRE
Successful on the Flat for Aidan O’Brien, Cashel Bay has been unable to win over hurdles yet but put up a decent showing on his last start when third to Heezapistol in a Grade 3 juvenile hurdle at Punchestown on January 19. Also entered in Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

02301 CRUSSET (IRE) 4 b g Petardia - Go Flightline (Common Grounds)
Owner: Sean Murphy Trainer: Tony Mullins IRE
Formerly trained by Liam Browne, Crusset is now with Tony Mullins, who was told by Browne that the gelding might improve away from the Curragh. This advice certainly seemed to work as he won his first start for Mullins in a four-year-old maiden hurdle at Gowran Park on January 24.

DEFINITE BEST (IRE) 4 b f Definite Article - Meglio Che Posso (Try My Best)
Owner: Mrs G P Gaffney Trainer: Tony Mullins IRE
Another entry yet to try her hand at hurdling, Definite Best won two small handicaps over seven and eight furlongs at Dundalk and Tralee respectively last year.

000 DRUNKEN WISDOM (IRE) 4 b g Ridgewood Ben - Tait’s Mistress (Doyoun)
Owner: Flann Costello Trainer: Flann Costello IRE
Presumably vast improvement is expected of Drunken Wisdom who on his first two runs in maiden hurdles has not been able to get within 21 lengths of the winner.

1 FIND THE KING (IRE) 4 b g King’s Theatre - Undiscovered (Tap On Wood)
Owner: J S Gutkin Trainer: Edward O'Grady IRE
Another entry to have an unblemished record over jumps, having won his only start over timber in a maiden hurdle at Clonmel on December 8 where he was eight lengths too good for Mind Over Matter. Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

33 KHETAAM (IRE) 4 b c Machiavellian - Ghassak (Persian Bold)
Owner: Mrs J Hurley Trainer: Noel Meade IRE
Khetaam has finished third on both of his outings over hurdles, most recently in a maiden hurdle at Naas on January 6, when only beaten four-and-a-half lengths by Tender Cove.

MONITORING (FR) 4 gr c Linamix - Monitrice (Groom Dancer)
Owner: M A Ryan Trainer: Ted Walsh IRE
A winner of an extended 12-furlong handicap on the Flat at Saint-Cloud in France in June, Monitoring is something of an unknown, never having raced over hurdles for new trainer Ted Walsh.

4055 MUSADAF (IRE) 4 b g Pennekamp - Aminata (Glenstal)
Owner: Mrs B Durkan Trainer: Bill Durkan IRE
After finishing fourth in a maiden hurdle on his first start over timber, Musadaf was stepped up in class and finished last of 11 in a Grade 2 juvenile hurdle at Leopardstown on December 26. The Pennekamp gelding has been placed fifth on his last two starts in maiden hurdles.

NAAHIL (IRE) 4 ch g Elmaamul - Nwaahil (Nashwan)
Owner: Robert Sinclair Trainer: Dermot Weld IRE
After his second victory on the Flat for Dermot Weld in a nine-furlong contest at Fairyhouse in August, Naahil’s trainer stated that his charge will make a high-class hurdler. Yet to race over timber.

312 NEWHALL (IRE) 4 b f Shernazar - Graffogue (Red Sunset)
Owner: Mrs H McParland Trainer: Francis Flood IRE
Tough and consistent filly who was a good handicapper on the Flat, winning four races at Down Royal, Roscommon, the Curragh and Punchestown during the latest Flat campaign. Appeared to take well to hurdling when a staying-on third on her hurdles debut at Thurles on November 29. Fulfilled that promise when she landed the Grade 2 Denny Juvenile Hurdle by four lengths from Moore’s Law at Leopardstown on Boxing Day. On her latest start she ran well when going down to Heezapistol in the Grade 3 Juvenile Hurdle at Punchestown on January 19.

1110 PASTEUR (IRE) 4 b g Eagle Eyed - Life Support (High Estate)
Owner: Mrs Phonsie O'Brien Trainer: Noel Meade IRE
Fairly useful Flat performer (won a maiden at Thurles in October) and appeared to take really well to hurdles with victories in a maiden hurdle at Tramore and juvenile events at Tralee and Listowel. However, he was rather disappointing when upped in class last time out, finishing a well beaten seventh behind Newhall in the Grade 2 Denny Juvenile Hurdle at Leopardstown on Boxing Day.

Also entered in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle and the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

02 SWORDPLAY 4 ch g Kris - Throw Away Line (Assert)
Owner: Sean Mulryan Trainer: Michael O'Brien IRE
With Gerard Butler on the Flat in Britain, where he won a classified event at Chester (beat subsequent Doncaster Cup winner Alleluia) and a handicap at Goodwood. Subsequently sold for 50,000gns at Tattersalls in October and sent hurdling with Michael O’Brien. Looks to have been slightly disappointing so far in that sphere, finishing eighth on his debut at Naas on January 6 in a maiden hurdle and a one-paced second in a similar event at Tramore on January 17.

1 TENDER COVE (IRE) 4 b g Balla Cove - Fair Tender (Tender King)
Owner: Cabin Hill Syndicate Trainer: Paddy Mullins IRE
A decent sprint handicapper on the Flat for Dermot Weld in 2001, winning a valuable handicap over six furlongs at the Curragh in October. Despite his background, Tender Cove took extremely well to hurdles on his one outing, registering an easy success in a maiden hurdle over two miles at Naas on January 6.

Also entered in the Gerrard Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

00120 WELL FELLA (USA) 4 gr g Fastness - Misnan (Nantequos)
Owner: Cathal McCarthy Trainer: Cathal McCarthy IRE
Triumphant in a maiden hurdle at Navan on October 18, where he stayed on strongly to win by seven lengths. He was then beaten a short-head by Balapour in the Grade 3 Fairyhouse Juvenile Hurdle on December 1 and on his latest start was a well beaten eighth behind Newhall in the Grade 2 Denny Juvenile Hurdle at Leopadstown on Boxing Day.

FRENCH-TRAINED ENTRIES IN THE JCB TRIUMPH HURDLE

-021 GREAT LOVE (FR) 4 gr g Great Palm - Andrew’s Love (St Andrews)
Owner: Remy Picamau Trainer: Philippe Boisgontier FR
Won in impressive fashion on his latest start, when taking a hurdle at Pau by six lengths on January 20. Prior to that, he had finished second at Pau (beaten a head) on December 28 and was eighth on his hurdling debut at Mont-de-Marsan on October 14. Has also been placed on the Flat at La Teste (twice) and Toulouse. He is trained close to Pau racecourse by Philippe Boisgontier.

2 KELAMI (FR) 4 b g Lute Antique - Voltige De Nievre (Laniste)
Owner: Queen Elizabeth Trainer: Francois Doumen FR
The Queen Mother’s Kelami will surely be winning soon if his debut effort over hurdles is anything to go by. He finished the one-and-a-half length runner-up to Green Ideal in a Newbury novices’ hurdle on December 19, and the winner is reportedly among Nicky Henderson’s premier younger horses.

111311 TEMPO D'OR (FR) 4 b c Esprit Du Nord - Peau D’Or (Pot D’Or)
Owner: Mrs F. Montauban Trainer: Guillaume Macaire
Despite his tender age, the Guillaume Macaire-trained Tempo D’Or is already a prolific winner of hurdles and chases in his native France. On his British debut he was impressive when beating Live The Dream by four lengths in a Grade 1 juvenile hurdle at Chepstow on December 27 on his last start. Top hurdler and stable companion Jair Du Cochet won this event by exactly the same margin last season.

00402 WESLEY SNYPE (FR) 4 b g Passing Sale - Falcon Crest (Cadoudal)
Owner: Ecurie Passing Trainer: Francois Doumen FR
Formerly trained by Ellie Lellouche and did not show a great deal on the Flat or over hurdles. His one run for Francois Doumen was at Kempton on December 27, where he appeared to show much improved form when going down by a neck to the Nicky Henderson-trained Greenhope in a juvenile hurdle over two miles.

GERMAN-TRAINED ENTRY IN THE JCB TRIUMPH HURDLE

21 ELUNA 4 ch f Unfuwain - Elisha (Konigsstuhl)
Owner: Stall Steigenberger Trainer: Christian von der Recke GER
Eluna was the first winner in Britain for German dual-purpose trainer Christian Von Der Recke when she won a Warwick novices’ hurdle by one-and-three-quarters of a length from Reviewer on January 24, on her second start over timber.
