THE VALUE BETTING COLUMN EVERY SATURDAY

3.55pm THE LADBROKE TROPHY, CHELTENHAM, SATURDAY, JANUARY 26, TWO MILES FIVE FURLONGS

GOING: Good to soft, soft in places

BP= best price of Coral Eurobet, William Hill, Ladbrokes and the Tote

1) 482- LADY CRICKET Martin Pipe 8-11-10b Tony McCoy
Goes well at Cheltenham and won last seasonís Thomas Pink Gold Cup. Ran quite well subsequently in the Hennessy (stamina stretched) but not up to the best in the King George or Melling Chase on two subsequent starts. Has won first time out for the past two seasons and must be respected although is handicapped right up to her best form here.

BP=3 Ladbrokes

2) 2-12 FOLY PLEASANT Henrietta Knight 8-11-10t Jim Culloty
Ran a cracker when second to the well-treated Shooting Light in the Thomas Pink Gold Cup and will appreciate the extra half a furlong here. Looks sure to go well again although he receives no respite from the handicapper and his trainerís yard has reported some of the horses to be coughing lately. Will like this soft ground.

BP=7/2 Coral, Ladbrokes, Tote

3) 1111 TURGEONEV Tim Easterby 7-11-05 Russ Garrity
Has been most progressive this season since joining Tim Easterby from Micky Hammond. Put up a career best performance last time to win the Victor Chandler at Ascot and could still be improving. The big doubt is the step up to this stiff 2m 5f (has never won over further than 2m 1f), although he has given the impression that he should stay further. Too much to take on trust.

BP=5 Ladbrokes

4) 147F LOGICIAN Ian Balding 11-11-00 Liam Keniry
One of Australiaís leading chasers although his sole British success came in a lowly affair at Bangor. Put up an encouraging performance behind Wahiba Sands and Best Mate at Ascot but then ran disappointingly at Ascot in December and was well beaten when falling at the last in the Warwick Gold Cup last time (didnít stay). This is more his trip but he remains quite high in the handicap and others appeal more. Also the ground has gobne against him.

BP=14 Ladbrokes, Tote

5) 1F-4 Eskleybrook Nigel Twiston-Davies 9-10-13 Carl Llewellyn
A decent handicap performer at his best and won twice last season at Kempton and Sandown (beat Foly Pleasant and is 6lb better off here). Didnít run that badly when having a pipe-opener in a novice hurdle at Hereford recently and has a good chance at a decent price.

BP=18 Ladbrokes

6) 64-2 Mr Baxter Basics Venetia Williams 11-10-08 Norman Williamson
Formerly quite a useful chaser in Ireland for Tom Taaffe and will be running for the first time for Venetia Williams in this race. The pick of his form would put him in with a chance but hasnít raced a great deal in recent seasons and doubtful whether he is good as he once was. That said, he is on a fair mark and the change of scenery may have made a difference to him.

BP=9 William Hill

7) 3-13 Frenchmanís Creek Hughie Morrison 8-10-07 Mick Fitzgerlad
2ND PREFERENCE Only runs here if Great Yorkshire Chase is abandoned.

8) 5432 Just Jasmine Kevin Bishop 10-10-04 Ruby Walsh
Tough and genuine mare although appears to have taken a little while to find her form this season. Will like this softer ground but could only finish fifth in this contest last year, although she is 4lb lower now. Probably more effective giving weight away in less competitive contests.
BP=7 Ladbrokes

9) -2UF In The Blood Philip Hobbs 11-10-02 Rupert Wakley
Ran quite well when fourth in last seasonís Tripleprint Gold Cup over the course and distance off a 5lb higher mark. Has not really been in great form since then and hard to enthuse about given that he has failed to complete in four of his six starts since then.

BP=33 Coral, Ladbrokes, Tote, William Hill

10) 6131 Dulas Bay Mark Pitman 8-10-00 Dean Gallagher
Has won twice so far this season in lesser company at Sandown and Warwick and this is by far his toughest task to date. Could still be improving, but certainly needs to if he is going to figure here. Races from 3lb out of the handicap and looks plenty short enough in the market. Likes soft ground.

BP=8 Ladbrokes

11) 8159 Hopeful Lord Dr Philip Pritchard 10-10-00 Eugene Husband
Won a handicap hurdle at Fontwell earlier this season but would appear to be totally outclassed here. Set to run from 25lb out of the handicap.

BP=150 William Hill

SUMMARY
A good competitive contest on paper. With a few niggling doubts about some of the market leaders, it pays to side with the outsider ESKLEYBROOK who is well weighted on his form with Foly Pleasant last year and he should have come on from his recent seasonal reappearance at Hereford.

GOOD LUCK

FANTASTIC RACING AT CHELTENHAM TODAY

The £75,000 Pillar Property Chase, todayís feature over three miles, one and a half furlongs at 2.45pm, is a fantastic prospect, with seven runners due to line up at Cheltenham.

The battle between Lord Noelie, Cyfor Malta, Marlborough, Legal Right, Rince Ri, Go Ballistic and Paris Pike will have a strong influence on the chasing championship, the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup on March 14.

Three of the last six runnings of the Pillar Property Chase have generated the winner of the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup in the same season.

The 2000 Pillar Property Chase was won by the Noel Chance-trained Looks Like Trouble, who returned to Prestbury Park two months later to take chasingís Blue Riband event.

The 1999 renewal saw See More Business, who had been successful in the 1998 Pillar Property, finish third to Cyfor Malta and the Paul Nicholls-trained chaser captured the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup shortly afterwards. He also won this race in 2001 but was denied the opportunity to do the double again when the National Hunt Festival was cancelled.

One Man took the 1997 Pillar Property Chase, the first occasion that this fine chaser had won at Prestbury Park, and, after his sixth in that yearís Gold Cup, returned to Prestbury Park in 1998 to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Festival.

The big Cheltenham chase at the end of January did not happen in 1996 because of the weather but the 1995 Pillar Property Chase was won by Master Oats, who beat the previous yearís heroine Dubacilla by 15 lengths.
The pair returned two months later to compete in the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup, filling the same positions and by exactly the same margin.

Pillar Property has generously backed todayís race since 1995 and there is a strong supporting card, with the £50,000 Byrne Bros Cleeve Hurdle (3.25pm), the £50,000 Ladbroke Trophy Chase (3.55pm) and the £25,000 Wragge & Co Finesse Juvenile Novicesí Hurdle (1.40pm).

The going is now Good to Soft, soft in places after six millimetres of rain in the last 24 hours.
