MELBOURNE CUP SUPREMO GREG NICHOLS TO BECOME BHB CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Greg Nichols, General Manager of Racing Victoria and the man responsible for the past three years for the ever increasing popularity of the Melbourne Cup, has been appointed Chief Executive of the British Horseracing Board.

Greg Nichols, 44, who was headhunted by the firm of Egon Zehnder International, was Chief Executive of the South Australian Thoroughbred Racing Authority and South Australian Jockey Club before moving to Melbourne Victoria in 1999. He has been involved in racing administration since 1987.

Peter Savill, Chairman of BHB, said: "I have known Greg for a couple of years now and have been impressed not only by his love of British Racing but the immediate rapport and enthusiasm he engenders in all those around him. He is already well known to many owners and trainers in Great Britain and I am sure he has the management and people skills to bring out the best in the new BHB executive team."

Greg Nichols said: "I am tremendously excited by the enormous challenges that face British Racing over the next few years and shall do my best to make a major contribution to the changes which are already well under way. I am greatly looking forward to working with the BHB Board and the whole of the BHB team and am confident that my experiences in Australian racing will prove invaluable in my new role."

The appointment of Greg Nichols almost completes the Executive restructure announced less than three weeks ago with just the Marketing Director to be appointed.

Savill said: "We are currently looking for a Marketing Director but no appointment will be made until Greg has joined us and is able to participate in the process."

Chris Reynolds, whose role as Managing Director is being phased out, came in for special thanks from the Chairman. "I would like to thank Chris for the contribution he has made in the past eighteen months at one of the most difficult times in BHB's short history. He has worked tirelessly to implement BHB's strategy but decided not to put himself forward for either the Chief Executive or Managing Director Commercial position, neither of which encompassed the role and responsibilities for which he was originally hired. I wish him all the best in his future endeavours."

LATEST NAD AL SHEBA ACTION

Nad Al Sheba Review - Thursday January 24, 2002

Paddy Rudkin had no hesitation in declaring that impressive three-year-old State City would take his place in the UAE 2000 Guineas after the colt's dominating performance at Nad Al Sheba last Thursday night.

With a certain strong representation expected from Godolphin, Rudkin said that State City deserved his place in the field after the colt easily accounted for Fueguino in Conditions company over 1,300m.

Prior to last night's event, Fueguino was at the head of everyone's list for the Dhs500,000 Pearls of Dubai International Sales Stakes at Nad Al Sheba on March 2 but was beaten for the first time in three runs this season.

State City was not part of the Pearls Of Dubai Sales however Rudkin said that he would run in the US$250,000 UAE 2000 Guineas the week before.

"I am very happy with this horse, he has come back from winning over 1,600m last start to 1,300m here," Rudkin said.

"Every week he just keeps getting better and better and in a month's time he will be even better and I think he deserves his chance in the Guineas."

State City was the first leg if a winning double for Rudkin, the trainer securing the final event with Ejtithaab, that horse providing Richard Hills with a winning treble.

Hills had earlier combined successfully with Mr Fear and Alnahaam. Mr Fear did his chances for the Pearls of Dubai International Stakes no harm with an impressive victory over the erratic Lanzador in the three-year-old Maiden, while Alnahaam impressed all with a win on his first UAE start in the Melbourne Racing Club Stakes for trainer Satish Seemar.

John Sadler and apprentice Michael Hussey have enjoyed a good association this season and that continued with the narrow but game win of Blue Star in the sprint, the horse just getting the better of the Rudkin-trained and Michael Hills-ridden Tangram.

Wayne Smith continued his excellent run, riding the Purebred Arabian Alto de Maligne to success in the opening event however the jockey now begins a three meeting suspension which will cost him mounts in HH The President Cup on Sunday and the following week's Jebel Ali Sprint. He will however be back to partner opening round winner Skoozi in the second round of the Maktoum Challenge at Nad Al Sheba on February 7.
